“The Color of Paradise” (film) –
an Introduction to Process Theology

Evening Lecture –
Thursday July 20
7 to 9 pm

Many of us are “doing our theology” at the movies, even though we wouldn’t call it that.

As Marjorie Suchocki says, “Films deal with the usual problems and joys of human existence, but with the compressed intensity imposed by the usual 90-120 minute time frame.   As the viewer watches the film, music and cinematography guide the viewer’s response, increasing the empathy through which the viewer more or less identifies with the film.  Following the screening, the viewer pulls away, returning to one’s own accustomed world.  But it’s  possible through guided discussion to reflect more deeply on the film’s implications for meaning, for values, and for spirituality.  This in turn offers insight that can enrich us in our ongoing lives.”

Join us at St. Andrew’s-Wesley for an opportunity to explore and discuss how the presence of God/The Holy is imagined in film by viewing excerpts from various movies, with context and comment from Marjorie.  Marjorie has organized many film festivals focusing on Film and Process Theology and she has written a fine book: Through a Lens Darkly: Tracing Redemption in Film.

July 21st, 2017 Friday Evening 7 – 9pm
Lecture:
Finding God in “The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” (film).  Marjorie will be using clips from the film, where the Tommy Lee Jones character is the “hound of Heaven” driving the “bad guy”, finally, to true repentance and forgiveness.

About Marjorie Suchocki

Marjorie Suchocki is United Methodist in background, professor emerita at Claremont School of Theology and Co-Director of the Center for Process Studies in Claremont.  She is an excellent theologian, author and presenter.  And she’s passionate about movies!

Beginning in 2003, Marjorie became a juror for Interfilm, a European based organization whose work is to provide jurors for international film festivals around the world.  She served multiple times at the Montreal Festival of World Films and at the “Berlinale,” which is Berlin’s international festival.  She is also an ecumenical number of Signis, a Roman Catholic organization which also provides juries.  Through that membership Marjorie continues to serve regularly at FilmFest D.C. in Washington D.C.  She also leads the Faith & Film jury of the Whitehead International Film Festival in Claremont, California.
